Luke Slater

As a prelude to his upcoming inaugural artist album, UK techno playa Luke Slater has released his debut DJ mix, Fear and Loathing, to decidedly mixed results. His double-CD includes all the basic food groups - from Jeff Mills, Ben Simms and Felix da Housecat to his own productions under his name and the alias Planetary Assault Systems. Unfortunately, for the most part, disc one rages on with no sense of peaks and valleys, only propulsion - even as the second disc tends to drag its feet. But if the flow is weak, the mixing is tight and the track selection is a high-grade mix of cutting-edge minimalism, old school Detroit and a few experimental excursions.
