Lucy Dacus Grapples with Being American on July 4-Themed Song "Forever Half Mast"

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Jun 25, 2019

Lucy Dacus is back with another holiday-themed track, this time acknowledging July 4 on "Forever Half Mast."

The track follows Valentine's Day cut "La Vie En Rose" and Mother's Day ode "My Mother & I," and the newly shared song toys with Americana-inspired sounds of twangy steel guitar and gentle strumming.

Underneath the surface, though, the song is much less patriotic.

"There is a daily dissonance one endures as an American wherein much of our joy is counterweighted by shame, where much of our pride lives in tandem with injustice and suffering," Dacus explained in a statement. "'Forever Half Mast' is about confronting this unavoidable culpability as an American citizen and consumer. Instead of allowing this guilt to paralyze us, we should try to let it influence us in positive ways."

Additional songs celebrating Bruce Springsteen's birthday, Halloween, Christmas and New Year's are expected out later this year. See Dacus' upcoming North American tour dates.
