Louise Burns

The Drake, Toronto ON March 21

Louise Burns's re-emergence and reinvention as a shimmering indie pop singer was a welcome one; her solo debut Mellow Drama was marked by a wealth of hooks and lush production. But Burns seems restless, starting her set with a Townes Van Zandt cover, then proceeding to perform a stripped-down set with members of Gold & Youth. Gone were the upbeat hooks, replaced with an almost bluesy vibe that skipped some of Mellow Drama's best songs. To be fair, Burns admitted to feeling a bit haggard after SXSW and that she and her drummer and guitarist only had a day to run through the set. But while her voice was in top form, her show failed to get the sparse crowd out of their seats.
