Lou Barlow

"Gravitate"

Indie-rock super guru Lou Barlow is so juiced to get the word out on his forthcoming album Goodnight Unknown, he's let a new song find its way into the world for free. Perhaps inspired by all the noise he's been making lately in Dinosaur Jr, Barlow's promised a return to the grittier aspects of his work in Sebadoh on this new solo outing. Indeed, Goodnight Unknown features production work from nu metal dude Andrew "Mudrock" Murdock (Godsmack, Avenged Sevenfold) and drumming from Dale Crover of the Melvins. Sounds weird, right?

Well, if "Gravitate" is any indication of the rest of Goodnight Unknown (due out October 6), the record is only really aggressive by Lou Barlow's standards. Terribly catchy and lo-fi, the song shifts more between his somber solo work and the dark pop swing of the Folk Implosion. In any case, it's a cool harbinger of a potentially great collection of songs.
