Logan Staats has lifted the curtain on a new album. The Mohawk singer-songwriter will share sophomore LP A Light in the Attic on March 24 via Red Music Rising.
Following his full-length debut Goodbye Goldia — released three years before being named the Season 1 winner of CTV's The Launch — the 11-song A Light in the Attic is characterized by Staats as "the soundtrack to picking yourself up, and dusting yourself off."
Home is at the heart of the artist's latest set of songs, which were recorded at his Six Nations of the Grand River apartment, the Sanderson Centre for the Performing Arts in Brantford, ON, and the Indigenous-owned Jukasa Studios.
"There is sweet grass and tobacco in every chord, there is sage and cedar in every falsetto, every song is my medicine," Staats shares in a statement, adding, "My nation and my community are in every chord I play and every note I sing. They've saved me."
Following previously shared single "Deadman" is "Holy Man," which has now been treated to a music video co-directed by the songwriter and Nathan McCory.
Staats shares how the song concerns "a moment in my life where I was in such a low place that I considered picking up a book that was actually the manual for the genocide of my people. In the end I realized it was my own culture that would lift me up."
He adds of the visual, "I got to shoot it with my friends and close mentor Glen Marshal who did a fantastic job. Sometimes when you're singing or acting out such intense subject matter it helps to have someone you trust and admire creatively working by your side. I think the video is a perfect visual depiction of that chapter of my life and the feeling of being in that hotel room alone writing the song."
