One Take Vol. 1

BY Glen HallPublished Mar 1, 2005

One Take is an uncluttered document of four musicians "conversing" on a variety of standards tunes with musicality and wit. And with a line-up featuring the consummately lyrical Guido Basso on flugelhorn and Lorne Lofsky on guitar teaming with B3 behemoth Joey DeFrancesco and crisp drummer Vito Rezza, this is like a long, relaxed, well-realised set at the Rex. It also has changes of pace, from the hot blowing on "Walkin'" to the gorgeously intimate "How Insensitive." Despite the drab visual ambiance of a dimly lit recording studio, the sound and overall production values are solid. One Take is mainstream jazz captured in a lively, candid setting.
