Listen to Several Shades of Why by J Mascis Now on Exclaim.ca

Best known as the white-haired mastermind behind Dinosaur Jr., J Mascis has led a long and storied career that also includes time with hardcore innovators Deep Wound and psych monsters Witch. Aside from all that noise, Mascis likes to strip things down with acoustic material every now and again. Such is the case with Several Shades of Why, which is streaming on Exclaim.ca all week.

The album will be hitting stores in real life on Tuesday (March 15) via Sub Pop, but before you pick up a copy you can make an informed decision, as you can freely stream the album here for the next week.

Centered on Mascis's stripped-down guitar playing and intimate songwriting, the ten tracks on Several Shades of Why also include contributions from Kurt Vile, A Silver Mount Zion's Sophie Trudeau, Kurt Fedora, Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew, Band of Horses' Ben Bridwell, the Black Heart Procession's Pall Jenkins, the Golden Road's Matt Valentine and Wounded Knees' Suzanne Thorpe.

As the press release puts it, "Together in small mutable groupings, they conjure up classic sounds ranging from English-tinged folk to drifty, West Coast-style singer/songwriterism. But every track, every note even, bears that distinct Mascis watermark, both in the shape of the tunes and the glorious rasp of the vocals. Ten brilliant tunes that quietly grow and expand until they fill your brain with the purest pleasure."

See for yourself: Several Shades of Why will be streaming on Exclaim.ca until March 21.
