Published May 10, 2011Toronto artist Katie Stelmanis has been on our radar for a while with her haunting vocal abilities and unique approach to songwriting, but it hasn't been until she started Austra that she has really begun receiving the wide attention she deserves. The gothic new wave trio have put the finishing touches on Feel It Break, their hotly anticipated debut album, and are now gearing up its release.
The record will be available in stores on May 17 via Paper Bag Records in Canada and Domino in the rest of the world, but we know that you can't wait much longer, so we have a free steam of the album right here for the next week.
Feel It Break was primarily written by Stelmanis and retains some of the operatic vocal sensibilities she's known for, but it also demonstrates a penchant for grimey new wave and a dark, seedy tone. Meanwhile, rhythm section Maya Postepski and Dorian Wolf ensure that the record maintains a danceable appeal despite the darkness.
The album was mixed by Damian Taylor, who has previously worked with everyone from Björk to the Prodigy. Despite the big-name help, an easily digestible electro pop record this is not, with album landing somewhere in between the Knife, Kate Bush, Japan and Soft Cell while still becoming its own head-scratching beast.
Feel It Break will be streaming on Exclaim.ca until May 16.
