Lisa Walker

Grooved Whale

BY I. KhiderPublished Jun 1, 2002

Grooved Whale opens up with the sound of a violin mimicking the feeding call of the humpback whale, before forming more drawn out violin notes accompanied by sounds of water splashing and subtle, tantric down-tempo rhythms. Lisa Walker is a classically trained musician who combines her research of whales via her own "pure" field recordings with recordings altered via sampler. Walker also uses synthesiser and traditional violin melodies woven together throughout this ambient atmospheric recording. The spacious ambient sounds and field samples make Grooved Whale something of a "moods music" recording, but far more tastefully put together than clichéd new age music. Often eerily graceful, the listener can almost feel him or herself swimming alongside these whales, accompanying these vast and graceful creatures on their underwater sojourns.
