Lindsay Smith

Were You Prom Queen?

BY Erica LeducPublished Jul 1, 2004

At first Lindsay Smith sounds like a flightier Carolyn Mark, but she proves to have a vocal range that covers as many styles as this album does. Most people couldn’t hit the same highs that she does and still sound good. Were You Prom Queen? is the result of a lifetime spent songwriting. In spite of classical training she has managed to keep an edge, resulting in a nervy folk, which she labels "alternacheesefolk,” a label that undermines what she is really capable of. Despite that categorisation, some of the songs are reasonably straight, but who would have known how much they needed songs like "One Fish Two Fish” and "Mr. Mcgoo” in their life. No matter what the subject matter the lyrics, though nothing profound, are admirably written.
