Lily Frost Finds the Calm in the Storm on 'Decompression'

The Toronto singer-songwriter takes a back-to-basics approach on her latest LP, bringing her sound fully into the Americana realm

Toronto's Lily Frost has released her 10th studio album Decompression, which marks the seasoned singer-songwriter's first full foray into an Americana sound.

Produced by Aaron Goldstein (Daniel Romano, Le Ren), Decompression is the follow-up to Frost's 2019 LP Retro-Moderne. Unlike anything else in her catalogue, the new album sees the artist ground herself in a collection of raw, piano-based material, distilling her craft into its purest form.

"Aaron had a vision for my next record," Frost said of her producer, who grounded the album in his renowned pedal steel. "Something real with a focus on the songwriting, live and not overproduced, like Carole King. That spoke to me. Overall, it's quite melancholic and earnest. The songs deal with change, self-love, desire, loss, and more. I'm on a path to deep healing and awareness and music has always been my way to process and transmute difficult times into something of strength."

The singer-songwriter added:

I am at the point where I want to share the songs I keep to myself, the ones that literally help me through life. I'm not trying to be cool or get on the radio. I just want to share these real expressions that reveal the deeper truths. They are raw and vulnerable songs I normally play when no one's looking, the songs I use to decompress. I hope they may speak to others on that deep-hearted level and maybe help them through as well.

Already having garnered high-profile syncs on shows like Grey's Anatomy and Workin' Moms, a Gemini Award nomination for co-writing the Being Erica theme song, and shared stages with the likes of Neko Case, Coldplay and Blue Rodeo, Frost has nothing left to prove. After the pandemic forced her to question her future as a creative, she realized that her songs are not merely what she does — they're who she is.

And she's ready to root down in that knowing, hoping others will likewise find shelter in her candour.
