Published Jun 23, 2011Despite his tendency to repeatedly delay albums, Lil Wayne has been pretty prolific over the past decade-plus, releasing a dizzying string of LPs, mixtapes, collaborations and guest appearances. Now, the rapper has suggested that he might soon call it a day, revealing that the forthcoming Tha Carter IV might be his final album.
"I'm bowing out still on top," he said in an interview with XXL. "I'ma make y'all want me when I retire. I'ma make y'all be like, 'Nooo!' I ain't leaving out this bitch when y'all be like, 'Yeah, it's about time, dawg.' Carter IV might be my last one. I'ma make y'all be like, 'Fuck!' Yeah, nigga, I'm gone."
This is surprising timing for Weezy to contemplate retirement. Not only is he just about to release an album, but he recently had a eight-month break while serving a prison sentence for illegal possession of a weapon. Apparently, Wayne's time in the slammer taught him that people talk about him even more when he's not around. If this retirement does come to pass, here's betting that he pulls a Jay-Z and returns soon after.
In the meantime, we're still waiting for Tha Carter IV, which is currently slated for an August 29 release. We recently named the record one of Exclaim!'s 10 Most Anticipated Albums of Summer 2011.
