Levon Helm Brings His Ramble Across the U.S. and North of the Border to Toronto, Calgary and Edmonton
Singer/drummer Levon Helm is best known as a member of the legendary rock outfit the Band, who acted as Bob Dylan's backing musicians when he famously went electric in 1965. Since the group's final dissolution in 1999, Helm has also built up an impressive solo career. His past two albums have both won Grammy Awards, as 2007's Dirt Farmer scored Best Traditional Folk Album while 2009's Electric Dirt earned him Best Americana Album. Not bad for a 69-year-old singer who was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1998.

In recent years, Helm has also hosted a concert series called the Midnight Ramble (see an Exclaim! review of one here). Taking place in his home studio in Woodstock, NY, the guest-heavy performances have included Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris and Norah Jones, among many others.

Levon Helm's Ramble is a touring version of those homegrown performances, and on June 29, Helm and co. will take the show to Toronto's Massey Hall. He will be joined by rock'n'roll journeyman John Hiatt, who will open the concert, as well as accompany Helm during part of his set.

However, the performance is only one of numerous shows Helm currently has planned for 2010, including several U.S. stops and two additional Canadian dates: the Southern Alberta Jubilee in Calgary and the Edmonton Folk Festival. Both Alberta performances will take place in early August.

No word on if any of the Midnight Ramble's famed guests will make an appearance at any of the shows, but you never know.
