Multi-instrumentalist Jef Whitehead -- best known as Wrest, the mind behind one-man black metal project Leviathan/contributor to fellow genre heavyweights Nachtmystium and Sunn O))) -- has been charged with sexual assault against his 26-year-old girlfriend.

According to an article posted by the Chicago Sun Times early Sunday (January 9), the 42-year-old is accused of choking and beating his partner to the point of unconsciousness by banging her head against a wall in his tattoo parlour sometime in the early hours of January 8.

The woman claims that upon regaining consciousness, she discovered Whitehead had assaulted her with his tattoo equipment and a pair of scissors before being knocked out a second time. Assistant Cook County State's Attorney Tom McGuire notes that the woman then woke up in the street outside of the shop.

Brought before a judge on Sunday dressed in black and sporting a heavy beard, Whitehead was ordered held on $350,000 bail. The couple had recently relocated to Chicago from California interested in making it their permanent home.
