Lee Ranaldo Band

"Albatross" (ft. J Mascis) (Fleetwood Mac cover)

In the weeks since the announcement of the star-studded Just Tell Me That You Want Me: Tribute to Fleetwood Mac, we've heard covers from the New Pornographers, Lykke Li, Antony Hegarty and Karen Elson. Up next is a droning guitar battle between Sonic Youth six-stringer Lee Ranaldo and Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis on instrumental outing "Albatross."

The song plays pretty true to the 1969 original, which was written by Fleetwood Mac founder Peter Green and issued as a single before popping up on compilation sets The Pious Bird of Good Omen and English Rose. The light arrangement finds cymbals occasionally bursting behind the bluesy fretwork. We're surmising that the choicest bends and wails are played by classic rock-inspired Mascis, while the more ambient textures are probably coming out of Ranaldo.

As previously reported, Just Tell Me That You Want Me: Tribute to Fleetwood Mac arrives August 14 through Hear Music/Concord.
