The Lawrence Arms

The Greatest Story Ever Told

BY Shawn MerrillPublished Oct 1, 2003

The Lawrence Arms embrace their creative differences and meld it into something solid and enjoyable. The band may appear to be kin to the Weakerthans or Samiam after listening to "The Raw and Searing Flesh.” Whereas "On with the Show” is a pounding and catchy as hell, Kid Dynamite-esque number, and from that point on is a musical roller coaster ride between the rapid-fire hardcore highs and the mellow poetic emo lows. However, such songs as "Alert the Audience” or "The Ramblin’ Boys of Pleasure” may bring to mind defunct New York rock’n’roll brats D Generation. Regardless, no matter what is taken away from listening to The Greatest Story Ever Told, it’s an unyielding listen from start to finish.
