Last Poets, Fab 5 Freddy, Richard Hell Collected on Strut's 'Change the Beat: The Celluloid Records Story 1980-1987'

Back in the '80s, Jean Karakos' Celluloid Records dropped over 100 records that celebrated New York's hip-hop, no wave and disco scenes, among others, and some of the label's highlights are being collected on a new compilation called Change the Beat: The Celluloid Records Story 1980-1987.

The compendium comes courtesy of Strut Records, who have cherry-picked the Celluloid catalogue for the set. It drops February 19 as two-CD and double-LP sets, as well as digitally. Included on the collection are hip-hop progenitors the Last Poets' "Mean Machine Chant / Mean Machine," as well as Fab 5 Freddy's "Change the Beat." Futura 2000's "The Escapades of Futura 2000," which features the Clash, figures on the tracklist too.

Avant rocker Bill Laswell's Material and Massacre projects are represented on the release, as is an out-there cover of the Beatles' "Day Tripper" from Shockabilly. Apart from the physical versions, five extra songs are being offered digitally, including Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Miles & Lightnin' Rod's "Doriella Du Fontaine." You can check the full tracklisting down below.

The physical formats of Change the Beat: The Celluloid Records Story 1980-1987 also come with liner notes featuring rare photos and interviews with Karakos — who moved his operation from Paris to New York — Laswell, Afrika Bambaataa, Time Zone's Rusty Egan, John Lydon and more.
