Last Days of May

Inner System Blues

BY Eric HillPublished Feb 1, 2003

The last calendar days of May are unpredictable: warm and summer-like during the day, frosty and chilled at night. Likewise, this trio (occasionally a quartet) keeps you wondering what's in store, as they shed the jam band cloak fairly quickly, trying on the mantle of Bitches Brew-era Miles Davis fusion. Their blues roots mingle with Hendrix-style acid blooms for freestyle excursions into guitar-driven psychedelia, and the ecstatic jazz drumming takes over occasionally, transporting the music into yet another realm. Like the lengthening May days, the changes happen so gradually and gracefully that it is effortless to follow.
