Lana Del Rey on Her Kanye West Lyrics: "You Never Feel Better for Having Written Something Like That"

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Aug 28, 2019

Lana Del Rey drops her latest album Norman Fucking Rockwell! later this week, and she's addressed some of her most memorable lyrics in a new interview.

Speaking to the New York Times, Del Rey explained her Kanye West reference in "The Greatest."

In the recently shared album track, she croons, "Kanye West is blonde and gone."

When asked if she had received any response from West, Del Rey replied, "No. Gratefully, no. Here's the thing: I don't want to elicit a response."

Del Rey further explained, "You never feel better for having written something like that. But Kanye just means so much to us. And by the way, I'm grateful to be in a country where everyone can have their own political views. I'm really not more of a liberal than I am a Republican — I'm in the middle. But it was more like the mood and the vibe around, 'Yo, this man is the greatest!' Really? The greatest? It hurt me. Did I have to say anything? No. But it's more just a line that represents a lot of things."

Del Rey previously voiced her disapproval of West's support of Donald Trump, following the rapper's appearance on Saturday Night Live last year. In reply to a photo of West in a MAGA hat, Del Rey said that Trump's election was "a loss for the country, " but that West's support of Trump was "a loss for the culture."

Prior to that, she had performed at West's wedding to Kim Kardashian.

Norman Fucking Rockwell! is out August 30 via Polydor. As previously reported, she will be taking the album out on tour, and you can see all the upcoming dates here.
