Lake Forest

'Silver Skies' (album stream)

Will Whitwham has made a name for himself as the frontman of the Wilderness of Manitoba, but now he's striking out on his own with the solo project Lake Forest. His album Silver Skies is due out on Valentine's Day (February 14) through Verite Records, but you can listen to the whole thing right now on Exclaim.ca.

This debut solo album is a collection of 11 glum folk tunes that were written last winter when the Toronto singer decided to write a song a day during some downtime from the Wilderness of Manitoba. Inspirations for the project include his reoccurring dreams of a family cottage, plus the Dave Eggers novel A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius.

So how does it compare to his full-band work?

"It ultimately delves much further into the introspective songwriter territory rather than the collaborative band dynamic," Whitwham explained in a statement. "I started making music alone and always find myself returning to it and creating that way again. I'm writing all the time and can never really fit it all into one project because I feel like there is so much music out there."

Take a listen below and, if you like what you hear, pick up a copy for yourself or your sweetie when it comes out on Valentine's Day. Also be sure to check out his recent appearances on Exclaim! TV over here and here.
