In My Headphones

Lady Daisey's follow-up to her 2010 debut, In My Pocket, covers the same ground as its predecessor, and that's not a bad thing. In My Headphones is a playful, optimistic collection of funky soul jams with a banging hip-hop backdrop (thanks to producer and Daisey's husband, Batsauce).

Vocally, the Jacksonville, Florida-based Daisey still evokes Erykah Badu and Nelly Furtado but shows definite signs of maturation and confidence on the bouncy feminist manifesto "Kiss My Grits" and holds her own on an all too rare collaboration with George Clinton, the wickedly funky stomp of "Get Got." With a persona as sunny as Daisey's, there's a danger of smarminess, but it's smartly avoided on the poignant "Love Is" and Batsauce's head-bobbing and atmospheric production adds some needed tension to the romantic chase of "To Find You." In My Headphones is a solid effort with a contagiously happy spirit.
