La Roux have been one of the major breakout synth pop acts of the past two years, but singer Elly Jackson isn't about to declare an electronic revolution. In fact, the fiery-haired frontwoman recently declared that '80s revivalism is over.
"I don't want to make synth music for the rest of my fucking life," she told Spinner. "It was a time when I was into that, but whatever, it's done with; it's gone. The whole genre is so over. It was my thing and I'm bored with it. If I see anything more '80s-themed, I'm going to bust."
As for what comes next, she said, "I want [the next album] to be more human, more open, warmer," hinting that they may use live instruments rather than electronic programming. She explained, "I'm as impatient for a new direction as anybody else, but I think it's going to be a bit of a new discovery."
This confirms what Jackson previously told the A.V. Club back in June, when she said, "As far as I'm concerned, the '80s resurgence is over. If I released this record in a year or a year and a half, it wouldn't be received in the same way at all. It happened to catch the industry at a good time."
If Jackson is going to be leaving the '80s behind, she just may have to abandon that Flock of Seagulls-style hairdo too.
