Amidst growing concern about the global impact of the coronavirus epidemic, we've seen massive disruptions in the music and film industries over the last few weeks, including a delay on the release of the upcoming Bond flick, the cancellation of Ultra Music Festival and growing concern about Tool's massive live tour spreading the virus.
Now, nü-metal is taking a hit, with Korn's eclectic band merchandise dwindling on their webstore.
Prior to the global health event, the band had a black surgical-style mask (seen above) with the Korn logo listed alongside branded hoodies, blankets and Korn Koffee on their online store. Now, the $11 mask has completely sold out.
This is all despite the fact that masks of this variety do very little to prevent the contraction of the virus. The band's website even includes a disclaimer noting that the mask only works to protect its wearer from splashes and is ineffective as a protector from inhalants.
The product description reads:
Surgical masks are not considered respirators by OSHA. They are fluid resistant, disposable, and loose-fitting protection that create a physical barrier between the mouth and nose of the wearer and potential contaminants in the immediate environment. They are commonly used in health care settings for the protection of the patient and they are also often used to prevent splashes from contacting the face of the wearer. However, surgical masks do not seal tightly to the wearer's face, nor do they provide a reliable level of protection from inhaling smaller airborne particles or viruses.
While Korn have put the surgical mask back up for pre-order on their shop, it won't be available again until March 20.
