King Tuff

'Black Moon Spell' (album stream)

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Sep 15, 2014

Garage-glam royal King Tuff (a.k.a. Kyle Thomas) is getting ready to take back the throne this month with his latest full-length, Black Moon Spell. Before the guy's second solo set for Sub Pop hits stores on September 23, though, you can stream the bubblegum- and brimstone-chewing collection on Exclaim.ca.

As previously reported, Black Moon Spell was tracked with producer Bobby Harlow at Los Angeles recording facility Studio B, with Tuff having explained in a statement that the record was "written without giving a shining fuck about nothing." Owing to the hex-indebted album title, he also claims the sessions involved "flashes of mysterious light, haunted microphones, songs that mixed themselves, demonic vortexes swirling in coffee cups" and more.

The previously teased title track opens the set with the fuzz-fuelled '70s rock grooves generally expected to blast out of an airbrushed van with plush lining. Elsewhere, power-pop freak-out "Sick Mind" details a sex-and-drugs fiend born "with a filthy desire," and "Headbanger" plays true to form with its pumped-up beat. "Madness" conjures up the manic leads and "la la la" vocals of Marc Bolan, while "Eddie's Song" blasts out with a similar joint- and fretboard-blazing joie de vivre.

As previously reported, King Tuff will be taking Black Moon Spell on a lengthy tour, which also touches down in Canada. You can see all the dates here.
