Australian jam band and rhyme enthusiasts King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard dropped I'm in Your Mind Fuzz last fall, with our reviewer describing the record as a "voraciously psychedelic piece with a strange sweetness and thrash ferocity." They followed it up with another LP titled Quarters! earlier this year and now, the band are set to return with a new record called Paper Mâché Dream Balloon.
It marks the group's seventh album and will arrive on November 13 via ATO and MapleMusic Recordings.
The prolific unit have been playing together since 2010, chanelling everything from the "heavily distorted, kraut-driven rock" of I'm in Your Mind Fuzz to the "jazzy, Dead-like trips" of Quarters! but frontman Stuart Mackenzie has no intention of settling on a single sound.
"I always wanted to be a band where you would expect the unexpected each time, with each album being treated like a different phase," he said via a press release.
Rather than pushing their recent darker vibes further, Paper Mâché Dream Balloon will hear the band going all-acoustic. Using acoustic guitars, flute, double bass, fiddle, harmonica, drums, clarinet and "whatever we could find really," Mackenzie and the band pieced together the 12 new tracks that make up the album. Additionally, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard will be taking the new tunes on the road, and Canadian fans will be able to catch them in Vancouver on September 1.
