Kim Gordon Slams Lana Del Rey in Memoir Excerpt

BY Josiah HughesPublished Feb 20, 2015

Next week, iconic Sonic Youth bassist Kim Gordon will release her long-awaited new memoir Girl in a Band. Excerpts from the book have already seen her take aim at her now ex-husband Thurston Moore, as well as her thoughts on Billy Corgan and Courtney Love. In a new excerpt from the memoir, she sets her sights on Lana Del Rey.

Specifically, Kim Gordon calls Lana Del Rey's idea of feminism into question, suggesting that the pop artist "doesn't even know what feminism is." Further, she calls her persona into question, suggesting that she "just off herself."

Today we have someone like Lana Del Rey, who doesn't even know what feminism is, who believes women can do whatever they want, which, in her world, tilts toward self-destruction, whether it's sleeping with gross old men or getting gang raped by bikers. Equal pay and equal rights would be nice. Naturally, it's just a persona. If she really truly believes it's beautiful when young musicians go out on a hot flame of drugs and depression, why doesn't she just off herself?

Girl in a Band will arrive on February 24 through the HarperCollins imprint Dey Street Books. Check back soon for Exclaim!'s review of the book.
