Kid Koala

Known for being friendly and approachable, Kid Koala (aka Eric San) comes across more as a performer than a typical turntablist or scratch DJ. San has a knack for mixing together everything from underground hip-hop to '80s new wave to strange educational spoken word recordings and thrift store finds, all in his own unique, "freaky" (his own word) style. San has no interest in playing it safe: no sampler, no headphones for the majority of the set, and yet San scratches and mixes snippets of his unearthed musical treasures at a rapid fire pace on three turntables. Perhaps the only small critique would be the unnecessary use of samples from a number of popular '80s tracks to draw in the crowd, which was already smitten. But then again, San admits to just wanting to have fun. How often do you go to a DJ show where someone yells out "You fuckin' rock!"?
