The Action Packed Mentallist Brings You The Fucking Jams

BY Cam LindsayPublished May 1, 2002

Just when you thought it was safe for hip-hop artists to release their music, Kid 606 (aka Miguel Depedro) is back with a vengeance to cut up and destroy every song ever written. With The Action Packed Mentallist..., his first album since 2000's P.S. I Love You, Kid has decided to come out with a record that is so extreme and blatantly illicit that you have to wonder how enormous this guy's nads really are. Listing all of the tracks he "borrows" would take another 300 words, but the most entertaining ones must be noted. "MP3 Killed the CD Star" smacks up D12's "Purple Pills" and transforms it into the latest happy hardcore sensation. Of course, a DMX track blown up with helium and the Buggles original MTV hit are thrown in to help make the 11 minutes even more enjoyable. Follow this up with a mishmash of Soul II Soul gone glitch-hop and "Walk Like An Egyptian" done to the beat of "Hey Ladies," on "Kiddy Needs a New Pair of Laptops," and the counts of theft and grand larceny have now gone up to armed robbery. It's not until "Never Underestimate the Value of a Holler" kicks in that you realise that this butchering of Missy's "Get UR Freak On," Jay-Z's "Big Pimpin'" and Black Sabbath's "Sweet Leaf" isn't theft at all, and instead should be seen as pure genius. He is the one record companies should be afraid of, not Napster. For those who thought his NWA remix was going too far, you ain't seen nothin' yet!
