Today (June 5), Neko Case collaborator Kelly Hogan released her solo album I Like to Keep Myself in Pain via Anti-. While you mull over whether to buy yourself a copy of the 13-song collection, you can preview the entire thing at Exclaim.ca.
The bulk of the album consists of tunes written by indie stars like Andrew Bird, Vic Chesnutt, the Magnetic Fields, M. Ward, Handsome Family, Robyn Hitchcock and more. The twist is that, unlike most cover albums, these tunes were set aside specifically for Hogan. They were then performed by the singer and her backing band, which includes Booker T. Jones and esteemed session drummer James Gadson (Bill Withers, Beck).
Stylistically, the album falls somewhere between pop, country and soul, which is only fitting given her contributors. If you're curious to hear one of Hogan's own tunes, be sure to lend your ear to track six, "Golden," which she wrote herself.
Hogan said in a statement, "This record is my history and all my acquired tools and these really amazing songs that people sent me. I'm just this person who loves music. And it's my life. And I hope that people love the songs as much as I do and I hope people will listen to them and make out to them."
