Kelly Clarkson Says Scooter Braun Was Offended When She Encouraged Taylor Swift's Re-Recording Project

"I think he thought I was attacking him"

In an interview for SiriusXM, Kelly Clarkson recalled Scooter Braun's less than favourable reaction to her encouraging Taylor Swift to re-record her albums after she lost the rights to them when Braun purchased her masters

In 2019, after learning that Swift was upset that she lost the rights, Clarkson took to Twitter, saying, "Just a thought, U should go in & re-record all the songs that U don't own the masters on exactly how U did them but put brand new art & some kind of incentive so fans will no longer buy the old versions. I'd buy all of the new versions just to prove a point."

However, Clarkson doesn't claim any responsibility for Swift's re-recording, a decision that ended up being hugely successful — her recently released Taylor's Versions of Fearless and Red both topped the charts.

"She's brilliant, she would've come up with that on her own, and she maybe already had before I even tweeted it," said Clarkson.

However, Clarkson recalled that when she ran into Braun following the Twitter exchange, he seemed personally offended.

"I think he called my manager at the time… I don't know what happened or what was said, but I think he thought I was attacking him," though Clarkson ensured it "wasn't anything against him," she was just trying to help her fellow singer regain control over songs that she created herself and were clearly dear to her.

"She writes everything. It's so important to her," said Clarkson. "She's a businesswoman. It felt wrong that she didn't have the opportunity, right? That's the thing. It's like, if you have the opportunity and you choose to not pay that much money, that's one thing, but to not have the opportunity to own something that is really important to you [is another]."
