Kelela Announces 'Hallucinogen' EP, Shares New Video

As previously reported, beloved R&B performer Kelela is gearing up to release an expanded physical version of her Cut 4 Me mixtape later this month. She's not just looking back, however, as the singer has just announced a new EP.

The release is called Hallucinogen and features six new songs from the artist. They were originally intended for her debut album, which is expected later this year. Co-writing and production on the EP was handled by Boots, Mocky Salome and Arca.

A press release explains that Hallucinogen follows themes of "rejection and amputation," "feral lust and longing" and then, at last, "the payoff."

The write-up also sees Kelela look back on her working relationship with Arca. She recalls first meeting the artist on a boat in 2012, then spending three 14-hour days working on music together.

EP opener "A Message" is one of the early songs they wrote together. "The initial version of the song spilled out of us in about 25 minutes," Kelela recalled. "Since then, it's been like a sculpture that I've come to and refined over time, adding a lyric here, refining a melody there, adding a bridge, etc. It's a process that is now finally complete with its release and I'm so happy that I finally get to share it with all of you."

Hallucinogen will arrive on May 5 via Fade to Mind. The music video for "A Message" is available to watch below.
