Kat Burns

Kat Burns is a lovely find, a delicate vocalist with a confident touch. Her introspective and emotive folk songs surely owe a debt to Julie Doiron and Chan Marshall but there is something cloudier here. The spirit of Elliott Smith haunts songs like "Not now…,” "Waiting by the Fence” and the title track. Amongst the ghostly multi-tracked vocals and Burns’ vivid lyricism is a callout to someone named Elliott on the song "Closet Genius,” which may or may not offer clues about her muse here. In any case, Burns has created a beautiful EP with For the Birds, showcasing both her dynamic, husky voice and a remarkable talent for writing fragile, stirring songs.
