Tides

With Tides, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith offers us a candid look into some of her earlier recordings. Despite these tracks being older, they are just as considered and mature as her more recent releases. Each sound being so carefully considered means that the listener must consider each one carefully, allowing their simplicity to shine through as one gives themselves over to the music. "Tides I" is reminiscent of the quieter moments on The Kid, each note and space constructed to create a beautifully balanced whole.

The songs on Tides were created for Smith's mother to use during her yoga practice, and the atmosphere they give off certainly lends itself to a meditative and reflective state. Synths drone and resonate in the background as other sounds twinkle and sparkle like droplets across them. Anchored by the repetition, tracks like "Tides III" are given space to grow and explore without losing the comfort of familiarity.

Aptly named, listening to Tides is like sitting on the beach for a day and letting the surf wash over you; the water rises and falls and you are there with it, present in all its glory and bliss.
