Published Jun 02, 2016When news first broke of Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie's terminal cancer diagnosis, tributes from fans and fellow musicians alike flooded the Internet, including a tweet from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in which he called Downie "a true original."
During a press conference at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario today (June 2), Trudeau was asked if he plans to attend any of the Hip's upcoming summer tour dates, CBC reports. He told the media that he has been fortunate enough to see the band and has met Downie many times before.
"I am lucky enough to have seen many Tragically Hip concerts throughout my life, and Gord Downie is someone I have an extraordinary amount of respect for," he told reporters. "He's someone I've met a number of times in various contexts over the years, and his status as an extraordinary Canadian creative force and icon is not to be understated."
Trudeau continued: "Mostly, he's just a great guy. And I know I speak for all Canadians when I say, 'We're with you, Gord."'
Trudeau was also asked if the government had any power in addressing concert ticket sales, with fans being forced to pay astronomical resale prices to scalpers for the band's Man Machine Poem tour dates. Though his answer was short, he said the government would look into following up on the issue at a later date.
