Just a Fire

Light Up

BY Sam SutherlandPublished Dec 1, 2003

Composed of members of June of 44, Sweep the Leg Johnny and Abinlene, Just a Fire play a heavily riff-based variation of everyone’s current favourite "post” genre: post-punk. Heavily influenced by the current political situation in the United States, many of the songs on Light Up deal with the evils of the Bush administration, such as the reggae-tinged "Snake In That Bush.” Finding much of their influence in late-era Clash, dub and reggae beats feature prominently at various points throughout the record, though even these sounds are filtered through the boys’ post-punk filter. Wonderfully dirty sounding guitar solos are littered throughout the album, giving each track a very earthy, honest sound. The album closing title track finishes things off in an appropriate way, promising more great things from this almost-a-super group.
