As July Talk launched into "Blood & Honey," the energy of singer Leah Fay was unmatched, bouncing off monitors and the drum kit, headbanging, grabbing and shaking singer Peter Dreimanis by the collar as he plugged away on guitar. The Toronto-based outfit ploughed through favourites like "Summer Dress" to a frenzied crowd that grew with each wrangled riff.

Part of the charm of July Talk is the back and forth between Fay and Dreimanis during the songs, the playful competition between the two, the jittery movement — the push and pull onstage that makes the live performance all the more engaging. "This song is for all the shitty men," quipped Fay, dropping right into "Gentleman," the duo intimately searching out each others' faces, and Dreimanis' gravelly vocals adding a gritty tinge to the track, and the set as a whole.
