Julien Temple to Direct Marvin Gaye Biopic

Storied music documentarian Julien Temple, whose work includes Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten and the Sex Pistols' flick The Filth and the Fury, will branch out into biopics with an upcoming film about the life of acclaimed R&B legend Marvin Gaye.

According to Screen Daily [via Prefix], Temple has been given the go-ahead to start filming a movie about the soul singer. The film, which may be called Sexual Healing, follows the story of Gaye's battle with cocaine leading up to the recording of his career-making Midnight Love album.

According to producer Jean-Luc Van Damme, the film has taken five years in pre-production to finally get the green light. "It has been a long fight," he said.

Temple has secured the rights to the songs from the album from EMI and plans to start shooting in Ostend, Belgium, where Gaye lived during the making of the album. Casting choices have not been revealed just yet, but if you ask us, we think this is the role R. Kelly was born to play.
