TRACK OF THE DAY: Christmas time tends to bring out the worst kind of seasonal music - insipid, innocuous and just plain boring. Thankfully, every couple of years we get a song that truly deserves to be pumping on the speakers of every shop in the mall.
This year, miraculously, we have two. First there's Fucked Up's star-studded version of bleeding-heart charity classic "Do They Know It's Christmas," a wonderfully over-stuffed take on the over-stuffed original.
Then there's Julian Casablancass' reworking of the SNL contemporary classic "I Wish it Was Christmas Today." Casablancas's version takes what was essentially a joke and transforms it into an earnest and pretty awesome one-off single for the holiday season. I'd take this song over half of the tracks on Casablancas's solo record any day.
