Jules Chaz

Toppings

BY Bryan WellsPublished Sep 26, 2010

Great beat-smithing is an art coveted by many yet executed perfectly by few and timeless when done right. Chaz may be a new name to many, but don't let that fool you; he rolls with good company in his hometown of Victoria, BC, where he shares studio space with members of Cobblestone Jazz, Tyger Dhula and Danuel Tate. It's cultivation ground for a highly creative community that has spawned world-renowned music of the highest calibre. Toppings, the first full-length from Chaz, instantly puts him in the same league as Godlike beat chefs Flying Lotus, Pete Rock and J Dilla. Staying left of centre with wonky, off-the-grid drumbeats and tasteful snippets of soulful vocals is the bread and butter of Toppings. Danuel Tate lends his superb vocoding skills to "Yes I Do," which will surely be on repeat in your mind for a long time to come.
