Joshua Hyslop

'Where the Mountain Meets the Valley' (album stream)

BY Alex HudsonPublished May 15, 2012

Following a series of tours and low-key releases, not to mention a truly crazy story about escaping near death in India, British Columbia folksinger Joshua Hyslop is finally ready to drop his debut album. Where the Mountain Meets the Valley arrives digitally today (May 15) via Nettwerk Records, and you can stream the whole thing here Exclaim.ca.

As fans have come to expect from Hyslop, the album consists largely of mellow acoustic arrangements, crooning vocals and introspective lyrics. But as peaceful as the collection sounds, a statement from the songwriter reveals that it was inspired by a particularly turbulent time in his life.

"I've been close to death twice, I've lost 45 pounds, I've been very very low, the worst I've ever been," he revealed. "But, at the same time, I got signed to a record label and I got to travel the world; I saw things that I'd never get to see normally. So, it's been an incredibly up year and an incredibly down year. And that's really the dynamics of life."

Take a listen at the bottom of the page, and if you like what you hear, you can purchase the record now over on iTunes. Note that the digital release will eventually be followed by a physical release on July 3. Hyslop's tour dates are also below.
