Johnny Marr Sets Release Date for 'Call the Comet' Album, Shares New Song

Smiths guitar hero Johnny Marr has properly announced his upcoming album Call the Comet, as well as given us a new single.

Call the Comet is set to arrive on June 15 via New Voodoo, and for a taste of it, you can now hear the new single "The Tracers." It's available to stream below.

As previously reported, Marr teased an upcoming political record late last year, explaining that the music addresses "what it feels like to be alive in the UK right now."

"There's a track called 'Bug,' which is about the virus of the rightwing and bolstering our immune systems," he explained at the time, speaking to The Guardian. "And there's another song that is about the feeling directly after Trump and Brexit, but it turned into a story of escaping into this kind of alternative society. There are a few songs that imagine an escape from — I've got to say it — dystopia."

In a newly released statement, Marr further explained, "Call the Comet is my own magic realism. It's set in the not-too-distant future and is mostly concerned with the idea of an alternative society. The characters in the songs are searching for a new idealism, although there are some personal songs in there too. It's something that people like me can relate to."

Marr previously shared the song "The Priest," which featured Maxine Peake, though that song does not appear on the new album.

In addition to the new album, Marr has a series of upcoming tour dates lined up, including some in North America. This includes a Toronto stop on May 30.

Call the Comet will mark Marr's first proper studio album since 2014's Playland. He did, however, release the live album Adrenalin Baby in 2015 and an autobiography titled Set the Boy Free in 2016.
