A thoughtfully constructed and comprehensive, ruminative talking head music documentary, Johnny Cash’s America is a breathtaking encapsulation of the man and legend. Spanning Cash’s entire life, this DVD and its accompanying soundtrack appear to be your standard slice of cobbled-together nostalgia but a closer look at the record’s track listing reveals rare performances and informed sequencing. While the film’s gamut of interview subjects, from Al Gore to Snoop Dogg, is interesting, it’s really close Cash family members, childhood friends and associates that make the film so incredibly insightful. From Cash’s children to original bassist Marshall Grant and producers "Cowboy” Jack Clement and Rick Rubin, Johnny Cash’s America skilfully weaves together an awes-inspiring original’s songbook with his improbable tale of sin, love and redemption, presenting the whole of Cash with warm care and close attention to detail. Plus: bonus interviews, family films, bonus performance.
