John Wilkes Booze Five Pillars Of Soul

John Wilkes Booze is a sextet out of Bloomington, Indiana with concepts oozing out of every pore of their six bodies. Formed back in 1999, their debut recordings from 2002, Five Pillars Of Soul, were five limited CD EPs based on five persons "who have transcended their lives in various ways to make the world a better place for us.” Those lucky to be honoured include filmmaker Melvin Van Peebles, heiress-cum-revolutionary Patty Hearst, free jazz legend Albert Ayler, folk/glam rocker Marc Bolan and avant-garde meddler Yoko Ono. Now reissued by Kill Rock Stars as a full-length album, these five pieces meld so nicely your attention is required to realise when they’ve moved on to a new subject. The overall product is a refreshingly sleazy collection of whiskey-soaked gospel hidden behind psychedelic garage rock. If you ever wanted to form a cult of mentalist hero worshippers, here is your 13-step guide. (Kill Rock Stars)
