John Scofield Band

Up All Night

BY Brent HagermanPublished Jul 1, 2003

This rambunctious follow-up to the Grammy-nominated Überjam makes it known at the outset that adventurous real time electronic improv is the order of the day. Scofield's love of effects and sound manipulation is his guide as he explores, along with sampler and rhythm guitarist Avi Bortnick, the outer reaches of guitar tonality. With a rhythm section that wouldn't sound out of place at a funk fest, Up All Night is a phat Philly homage from the slow swampy "Watch Out for Po-Po" to the pedalling bass of "Four on the Floor." Add to that a freak-out disco track and a sideways glance at romantic jazz and you'll be up all night groovin' to Scofield.
