Joelle Leandre and India Cooke Firedance

This CD documents my favourite concert of the 2004 Guelph Jazz Festival. As a matter of fact it was on September 11th and if ever a morning of music could radiate hope on that most sombre anniversary, this was the one. So what will you get when you buy this CD? Two musicians in complete command of their instruments, with sounds ranging from blazing bowed meltdowns to percussive thumps and knocks, vocal exchanges, the blues, 20th century classical and tap-dancing! All this contained in an utterly fearless, and seemingly effortless, improvisational exchange. Cooke dances on violin while Leandre laughs and Leandre bows deep bass currents while Cooke sparkles on the surface. Moments captured in recording rarely seem to match the presence and fire of an inspired live exchange. When I left the concert that morning I felt like I had witnessed something really extraordinary and listening to this CD brings back about 90% of the memories. This is a recording worth having.
