Shins/Cold War Kids Drummer Joe Plummer Reveals Debut Solo LP

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Jul 8, 2015

Portland-based musician Joe Plummer has hit the skins for Modest Mouse both live and in the studio, and he's currently listed on the rosters of the Shins, Mister Heavenly and Cold War Kids. But now, he's stepping out from behind the drum kit to release his debut solo album.

Built in Sun is due out on August 7 via People in a Position to Know Records.

The nine-song offering was recorded during breaks from touring with the Shins and Cold War Kids, and began as an instrumental project. It has since evolved to include vocals, which are provided by Pall Jenkins of the Black Heart Procession — yet another band that counts Plummer among its members.

A press release cites Plummer's influences as a mix of John Cale, the punk vibes of the Wipers, John Reese and Ricky Wilson of the B52's, as well as soundtracks from the likes of John Brion and Clint Mansell.

In addition to the album announcement, Plummer has shared a sonic sampling of the new material in the form of "Honeybear." You can scroll past the tracklisting for Built in Sun to give the new tune a listen.
