Jimmy Rogers Blue Bird

Lovers of the blues will relish this definitive set by a key player in the classic Muddy Waters band. The leader shows relaxed authority not only as a singer/guitar player, but also in his scope as a composer. His laconic restraint is matched by the tumbling piano lines of Johnnie Johnson, whose relaxed touch animates this music into something special. Much of the solo fire here is supplied by the leader's son, Jimmy D. Lane, whose inventive guitar graces such memorable originals as the up-tempo "Blues Falling" to slow burners like "Why Are You So Mean To Me?" and the brilliant title track. Harmonica player Carey Bell sounds inspired throughout. His playing brings all the implicit passion of the leader's music to the surface and the result is a triumphant CD. (S.R.I.)
