These Toronto, ON-based Newfoundland expats are led by singer-songwriter David Picco, and they previously worked together in support of his solo debut, Saturday Night, Sunday Morning. Based on their self-titled first album, they are gelling nicely as a unit. This is fairly orthodox alt-country, in the early Wilco vein, but it's played with spirit and skill. Guitarist Jimmy Rose contributes two compositions, giving the album a little variety, and a Picco/Rose co-write, "Never Been Done," is one of the strongest cuts, suggesting that more collaboration might be advisable. The gently haunting final track, "You Are Only Listening (To Your Heart Start Up Again)," gradually builds in intensity, and is another album highlight. Keyboards from a couple of guest players help flesh out the sound beyond the quartet's guitar/bass/drums template. The production values are basic (the band self-produced, with Adam Ferri), and the album is likely a good representation of what JM sound like live. A Motel worth checking out. (Independent)
