Published Sep 26, 2011While legendary Scottish fuzz fiends the Jesus & Mary Chain are currently in the midst of a deluxe reissue campaign, many fans have been left wondering when the band will deliver the new full-length they first hinted at back in 2007. Regrettably, an interview with vocalist/guitarist Jim Reid reveals that the outfit have yet to even record any fresh material, but if and when they do, they could enter the studio with enough material for a double album.
Though mostly grilling him about the goodies the reissue campaign has to offer, Drowned In Sound managed to needle out a few details regarding the status of a possible upcoming studio album. Reid explained that the hold-up has to do with him and his brother, William Reid, not seeing eye to eye on the project.
"It's kind of difficult," Reid explained of the situation. "Again, we've got different ideas of how to record this album, which is the reason why it's never really come together. It might happen, it might not. That's pretty much all I can say about it at this moment in time."
Though his initial answer painted a grim picture, he did admit that if the siblings settle some issues -- he points to William being a precious perfectionist in the studio -- they could lay down countless tracks.
"William is a lot more prolific than me when it comes to songwriting," Reid confirmed. "I know he's got tons of songs. He's actually recorded a solo album but he just keeps tweaking it. I don't know if that will ever see the light of day but it's done, he's finished recording it. Maybe he should just stop mucking about with it and actually release it now? I've got a few songs lying around. I mean, between us, we've definitely got enough songs to do a Mary Chain double album if we wanted to, but it's just agreeing on how to record it."
While there's firm word on William's solo album, Jim Reid recently shared the new solo track "Black and Blues," which you can listen to below.
As previously reported, deluxe versions of 1989's Automatic and 1992's Honey's Dead were released in the UK today (September 26), while 1994's Stoned & Dethroned and 1998's Munki will be issued October 3, all through Demon Music Group.
