Jessie Reyez Reveals She Suffered a Herniated Disc

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Jul 12, 2019

Jessie Reyez had to cancel her Ottawa RBC Bluesfest performance last week, and now she's shared a health update about the injury that prevented her from performing.

Reyez originally implied that she had injured her knee at Firefly Festival on June 23, but it turns out after consulting with multiple doctors and getting an MRI, that she has a herniated disc in her lower spine.

In a new Instagram post, Reyez explained that the inflammation from the herniated disc has been affecting other nerves and muscles as well.

She went on to explain that "wear and tear" likely aggravated the disc, and at her Firefly show, her "back just gave out."

It makes sense, given her reputation for raucous, high-energy stage performances.

Thankfully, Reyez seems to be recuperating well.

"The good news is I'm getting better by the day," she said. "And with proper rest and rehab all signs point to no surgery. "

Reyez hasn't offered any updates on her upcoming festival dates, but she is currently still scheduled to perform at Squamish Constellation Festival, Osheaga and River & Sky in the coming weeks.

Sooo...I got injured during a show a couple of weeks ago. There were some reports that it was an injured leg. Although I did bang my knee up and get an irritated meniscus, the truth is, after seeing multiple doctors, I received an MRI a couple of days ago and the results showed a herniated disc in my lower spine. The severe inflammation from the herniated disc is affecting my other muscles and nerves. Doctors told me that wear and tear from prior activities is what probably aggravated the disc and on this particular show my back just gave out. If you've ever seen one of my live shows you know I put my body through a lot to give you guys the best show possible. The good news is I'm getting better by the day and with proper rest and rehab all signs point to no surgery. I wanted to be fully transparent because there's a few crazy rumours out there lol. Appreciate all the get well messages and positive energy. I love you guys. This shit means the world to me and I can't wait to get back to performing and singing and doing what I love to do with my FMLY of fans. But for now...time to chioo 😑...like Kenny said tho.. WE GONE BE AIIGHTTTT
